Looking to provide yet another critical service to those who live and work in Willowbrook and surrounding communities, the Board of Supervisors voted to establish a Child Care Center project at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Campus.

The Board approved a recommendation by Department of Health Services (DHS) Director Mitch Katz to draft architectural plans for converting the Hudson Auditorium at the MLK Campus into a Child Care Center that can house up to 100 children.

The Department of Public Works (DPW), which recently completed a feasibility study on the project site, recommended more than doubling the square footage of the Hudson Auditorium to 9,000-sq. ft. and also adding a 10,000-sq. ft. playground.

The interior remodel would include two infant rooms, two toddler classrooms, three preschool classrooms, an administrative office, reception counter, staff lounge, and support spaces.

“Both the staff at the MLK Campus, as well as residents of the neighborhood, have been clamoring for a Child Care Center,” said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who championed the development of the MLK Campus.

“Having a Child Care Center at the MLK Campus will allow doctors, nurses, other medical staff to rest assured that their kids are in a safe place nearby, allowing them to focus on keeping the community healthy,” Supervisor Ridley-Thomas added. “Local residents will also be able to take advantage of the service.”

Currently on the MLK Campus are a Community Hospital, Outpatient Center and Psychiatric Urgent Care Center. A Recuperative Care Center that will house homeless patients after their discharge from the hospital is under construction.
