Bass Calls for Action to Derail Governor’s Proposed Budget Cuts

Activists statewide are waging an all out assault against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts. At the forefront of the charge is Assembly Speaker-Elect Karen Bass, who sent out a call for action at a town hall meeting on May 3 at Holman United Methodist Church. Joining Bass at the meeting were Assemblyman Mike Feuer, Assembly Budget Director Craig Cornett and a host of speakers from various organizations who came together with one thing in mind—to drive home the devastating impact the proposed cuts would have on all Californians.

Talk about gross overkill. What else could anyone call dumping a record $2.5 million (with $1.5 million more on the way) by a special interest group, in this case Los Angeles labor unions, into the campaign kitty of State Sen. Mark Ridley-Thomas? The unions get away with this naked effort to buy a board seat through thinly veiled skirt-the-campaign-finance-rule-limits by funneling the cash through independent committees. It’s all perfectly legal, and it’s all perfectly a sham to nab a seat.
