According to city officials, August 8 marked “another Great Day in Compton” as the office of Mayor Pro Tem Janna Zurita and Compton Unified Board Vice President Satra Zurita organized their very first backpack giveaway. Planned two weeks after Janna took office again, the siblings worked with The First District Parents In Action Committee, an organization they established.  They gave over 600 underprivileged children backpacks filled with tools for success.

Each child received a backpack full of age appropriate supplies, I.e. Paper, binders, pencils, staplers, erasers, rulers, glue, glue sticks, highlighters, spiral notebooks, protractors, calculators, and other necessities. The day started with a welcome ceremony. Satra was the Mistress of Ceremonies.

Assemblyman Mike Gipson came to welcome the crowd and presented Janna  and Satra Zurita with assembly commendations for their community service. The crowd also received encouraging words from CUSD Board President Micah Ali, who Co-Sponsored the event and CUSD Board Members Skyy Fisher and Charles Davis. The families were also treated to great entertainment and lunch. Vendor booths were manned by organizations servicing student and family needs. Students were able to register for school at the Compton Unified School District Booth.

The FBI was there to fingerprint children so parents have vital information on hand in the event of an emergency. St. John’s Well Child and Family Clinic provided appointments and referrals for immunizations and back to school physicals. Crystal Stairs did onsite enrollment. There was information for the entire family  including enrollment information from El Camino College Compton Center.

“This was a great day and we were honored to be able to provide student with the tools they need to be successful,” said Satra Zurita.

“After all, these are our future doctors, lawyers, architects, scientists... Who knows the person to develop a cure for cancer may be among us getting a backpack today! I love it and I’m honored to serve the community where I was born!”

Added Janna, “Great to see so many families come out to support our annual backpack giveaway. We could not have done it without all of our great sponsors.”

Event sponsors included Commercial Development LLC Renaissance Plaza, Omega Psi Phi Tau Tau Compton Chapter, DeMenno Kerdoon, Ron's Maintenance, Central Basin Water District, Compton Water Department, Fallas, SEIU 99, AFSCME Locals 2325 & 3947, Prism Realty, Evelyn Armold, and Nationwide Environmental Services.
