Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti inducted three citizens into the Hall of Fame during the 2014 African American Heritage Month (AAHM) Celebration held at Los Angeles City Hall on Tuesday, February 11.

Inductees are:

• U. S. Judge Consuelo Marshall, the first African American Woman Los Angeles deputy city attorney and the first African American woman chief judge of the Los Angeles Federal Court     

• Dr. James Rosser, former president of California State University, the longest serving African American College President in California

• Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, the first African American woman in the California Legislature, the first African American woman in California to serve in U. S. Congress and the first African American to sit on and chair Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

In addition to those inducted into this year’s Hall of Fame, Garcetti also honored Academy Award winner Lou Gossett Jr. with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett with the Dream of Los Angeles Award and seven-time Grammy Nominee  Charlie Wilson with the Spirit of Los Angeles Award, for overcoming obstacles to achieve an unexpected successful solo career.

“Each of these individuals has an inspirational story to tell about their journey towards achieving career success,” said Garcetti.  “We are proud of the service they have given to Los Angeles, our nation, and to the world.” 

Another Peace Choir, a McDonald’s Gospelfest winner, X-factor star Elaine Gibbs, Nu-Soul Band, and singer Howard Hewett were among those participating in the opening ceremonies of the event.  The Los Angeles Post­master unveiled the 37th Black Heritage stamp at the event, where it was also on sale to the general public attending.   

The major African American Heritage Month events in Los Angeles are displayed in an annual calendar published by the Los Angeles City Department of Cultural Affairs.
