The Association of Black Women Physicians, (ABWP) celebrates their Virtual 39th Annual Charity & Scholarship Benefit & Silent Auction, on Sunday October 18, 2020 @ 11 AM as they bring their illustrious program and heartfelt mission to a virtual platform with Media Sponsor, ABC 7 TV. This year’s theme is “Advoca­ting for Health Justice…Our Mission Continues” – a moment to reflect on the organization’s legacy and contributions towards cultivating culturally competent student physician leaders since the organization’s inception.

Leslie Sykes, ABC7 Morning Show Co-Anchor, will be leading the program as Mistress of Ceremonies; as they honor Chandra L. Ford, PhD, MPH, MLIS, Founding Director, Center for the Study of Racism, Social Justice & Healing, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health; who will be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award; highlighting her stellar career with her studies on racism, social justice, and healing.

In addition, ABWP is honoring Judy Belk, President and CEO of The California Wellness Foundation, with the Humanitarian of the Year Award.  Both honorees truly uphold the power of advocacy for health justice.

This year’s show will be like no other as the health climate has changed globally.

 

Racism is now seen as a public health emergency, and ABWP is responding to the call with their virtual show and remarks from special guests, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Congresswoman Karen Bass, advocates for racial and health equity. Performing a “Tribute to this year’s ABWP Scholarship Recipients, entitled “Shine Bright”, also features Grammy Nominated Singer-Songwriter, & Actor, MAJOR, who burst into the spotlight in 2016, with the Billboard Chart topping hit & love anthem, “Why I Love You”, and seen in hit series, ‘STAR’, & feature films; ‘Get On Up,’ and ‘Legend’, with music charted in over 20 countries & videos reaching over 6 million  views and still growing.
