Notes, quotes and things picked up on the run from coast-to-coast and all the stops in between and beyond.

Preps (high school), colleges and pros are lining up to start their 2010 football seasons from coast-to-coast and all the stops in between.

Locally, coach Lane Kiffin, the new kid on the block, will be the first to showcase his tailback-laden USC Trojans against Hawaii on the Island Labor Day weekend Sept 2.

Who will be the Trojans’ starting tailback? It could be Marc Tyler.

The University of California, Los Angeles, doesn’t open until Sept. 4 against Kansas State on the road.

The NFL kicks off its regular season starting Sept. 9, featuring the Super Bowl champions, the New Orleans Saints, who will play against Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.

And the games continue from Sept. 10 to the 13.

Under Mike Holmgren’s leadership as president, the Cleveland Brown’s greatest player in history, Jim Brown, is being treated like an unwanted stepchild.

Brown has lost his role as a team adviser, and he won’t attend the team’s Ring of Honor ceremony later this month.

How can you have this event without Jim Brown? There is something wrong with this picture.

De’Anthony Thomas, the city’s 100- and 200-meters champion and Crenshaw High School’s tailback and defensive back, is all he’s cracked up to be and more.

Speaking of Thomas, Crenshaw’s offensive lineman, Marcus Martin, told the L.A. Times’ Ben Bolch: “He goes hard every play.

“On defense, he'll hit somebody in the mouth and have them hurting and we have to sit them out. On offense, he’s wearing our defense out every play.”

The Cougars were 14-1 in 2009 and was the first city football team to play in a State championship bowl game.

Crenshaw High head coach Robert Garrett told Bolch: “It’s hard not to like him. He’s not conceited, not braggadocio.”

Who do you think will win the next Super Bowl?

Well, a number of publications — including the Sporting News — are picking the New York Jets to win the Super Bowl.

And the beat continues…

Caster Semenya has been cleared to run in the 800 meters in the Commonwealth Games in India from Oct. 3 to 14.

According to The Associated Press, “Semenya has won all three of her comeback races since she was cleared to run by world athletics body, the IAAF, following an 11-month break because of a gender dispute.”

And the beat continues…

On his first round of golf on Aug. 26, after his divorce was finalized, Tiger Woods shot a six under par 65 to tie with several others for the lead in the PGA Championship in Paramus, N.J.

After that, in the next three rounds, Woods went bogie happy as he posted rounds of 73, 72 and 67. Woods picked up $157,500 as he finished with a 277 total.

Woods’ next stop is the Deutsche Bank Championship taking place this week.

How many of those pretty little green ones did Woods have to give up in his divorce settlement? It seems very few people really know.

Check this out: Michael Jordan had to reportedly give up $150 million in his divorce settlement. Surely Woods will have to shell out at least as much, or more, than that.

And the beat continues…

World and Olympic Games sprint champion Usain Bolt keeps setting records.

The track star reportedly became the highest-paid track and field player recently when he signed a three-year contract with shoe company Puma. No details were released, though.

And the beat continues…

Omega Psi Phi’s annual Celebrity Golf XXV tournament will take place Sept. 10 at the Montebello Country Club, 901 N. Via San Clemente.

Get more information by calling Earl Burner at (323) 636-5990 or Booker T. Moten Jr. at (323) 291-1616.

Proceeds from last year’s event sponsored five $1,000 scholarships.

And according to chairman Franklin Henderson, most of the folks who get scholarships are going for degrees in various fields, including law, computer science and medicine.

And the beat continues…

The L.A. Sparks made it to the first round of the Western Conference semi-finals, but the Sacramento Storm recently eliminated them, 81-66.

And the beat ends.
