Jeff Lorber doesn’t know why he was picked to kick off the Playboy Jazz Festival in the community, but the Philadelphia native is happy he was. He’d love for folks “to come and check out his music.” He’s looking forward to showing why he’s worthy of this distinction this Sunday, May 27, at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza’s Outdoor Promenade.

With piano stylings inspired by funky fusion masters Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, there’ll be a lot of heads bobbing and toes tapping to cuts from his early days in the 1970s to his current “Galaxy” CD project.

By the time that decade ended, Lorber had become one of the new voices in jazz fusion. He and his band first honed their craft in the Portland, Oregon, club scene and rapidly expanded their reach to a national and international audience via a combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures and compelling rhythms.

Lorber says he doesn’t consider himself a “smooth jazz” player, rather a “contemporary jazz man.”

Whatever it’s called, if this is your style of music, it’s FREE jazz.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donna Summer’s funeral will be a private one for family and close friends.

Publicist Brian Edwards said in a statement Friday that Summer’s family is overwhelmed and appreciates the outreach from fans and friends, but that her funeral services will remain private.

He didn’t provide details on when and where services would be held.

Summer died Thursday morning of lung cancer at age 63 in Naples, Fla. Edwards also said that the singer did not smoke.

Summer earned the title of Queen of Disco after releasing a string of dance hits in the 1970s, including “I Feel Love,” “Love to Love You Baby” and “Last Dance.”

Lover, friends, relatives are in your corner. They just have a hard time verbalizing it. Their support gives you the boost you need if you’d swallow your pride and reach out for it. Their help may not come in the form you want it, but it is in the form you need.  Soul affirmation: I find joy in facing responsibility this week.

It wouldn’t hurt to be a little less independent. Depend on someone. Declare a truce. Decide that you are not right. Elevate a friend’s opinion to your guiding principle for this week. Compromise. Be a team player and watch the reward unfold.  Soul affirmation: I calm my emotions by forgetting about the past.

You won’t have enough time to get as far away as you want to go, but you’ll have enough time to do some shopping for the trip. Your focus on what you need is keener now than closer to trip time. Get to the mall and buy your miscellaneous items.  Soul affirmation: High energy and clear mind gives me the winning edge.

Don’t waste time thinking about the past. Sure, they were wrong, but what does it matter now. Enjoy the present. Find something good to do for the rest of the week. Avoid conflict. Nothing is so important that it needs to be resolved this week.  Soul affirmation: I find comfort in the familiar.

You face a big challenge that allows you to take big steps toward your career goals. It’ll be on your mind for the next few weeks. Spend some time planning. Life is not always for fun and games. Games are not your biggest satisfaction anyway.  Soul affirmation: The key to my happiness lies in my sympathy for others.

Reconsider a business offer; it might be a good one. You’ve got time so sit down and weigh the pros and cons. Doing it alone is not best. Make a phone call. Talk to someone who knows you well. Get an objective opinion.  Soul affirmation: I graciously anticipate joy and this gives me the ability to give.

Your intuition is very high this week. You see where things are going even before they start. This will keep you from making false moves. Be careful not to let your suspicions keep you from making the moves that are definitely called for.  Soul affirmation: My mood is created by the company I keep.

Beware of financial pitfalls. Your thinking on money matters is not as clear as it could be this week. Someone will try to catch you off guard. This week your luck turns for the better, so spend it with the one you love or want to love!  Soul affirmation: A slowing of pace is just what I need this week.

Your mate has a sweet surprise. He or she might be a little timid about revealing it unless you present a very receptive mood. Choose your words carefully. You will receive good news about a loan or financial investment.  Soul affirmation: I look to distant horizons to find truth this week.

You and your mate should start saving for a joint project. It will make you feel closer to each other. It’ll give you something with which to bind the relationship. Otherwise, you might feel that you are drifting apart.  Soul affirmation: Self confidence is the key to my success this week.

Challenges will be ever-present for you this week. Work at it calmly knowing that you are getting some things out of the way. Tackle tasks using your famous self-control rather than your passion. Use your passion on the weekends. Let loose! Be free!  Soul affirmation: The sunlight of my spirit shines in the land beyond the horizon.

Harmonious communications are part of your charm, and you’ll get far this week by speaking your word in an easygoing way. You’ll find that your domestic arrangements are very comfortable to you.  Soul affirmation: I let my words reveal the not-so-hidden truth about my being.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson's daughter, Paris, talks about her late father in an interview with Oprah Winfrey airing Sunday.

Paris Jackson, 14, will be featured on “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” the channel said Tuesday. She and Winfrey discuss how the teenager is faring three years after the 2009 death of her pop star father.

“It never gets easier,” Paris says in a promotional spot aired by OWN, which also shows Winfrey asking if Michael Jackson wanted her to have “a quote ‘normal’ life.”

Paris and her brothers, Prince and Blanket, were closely sheltered during Jackson’s life but have been in the public eye since, appearing onstage at Grammy Awards and on other TV shows.

“Oprah’s Next Chapter,” which also will include an interview with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, will air at 9 p.m. EDT Sunday on OWN.
