Council President Herb Wesson wants the community to be aware of the recent Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) alert warning customers to beware of imposters posing as utility personnel making service-related telephone calls.

According to the LADWP, the imposters attempt to obtain money through a bogus unpaid LADWP balance by asking the customer to go to a nearby pharmacy and call a specific telephone number back with the customer’s financial information, or by demanding that they pay their bill with a pre-paid cash card.

The LADWP reports that their customers have been increasingly subjected to this scam and other fraudulent activities.  The agency has been and continues to be on security alert regarding these activities.

 “The public needs to know that the LADWP never calls customers seeking personal banking information,” said Wesson.  “All of us have to pay closer attention and be alert to these kinds of scams that are being played on us, and make sure we help get the word out about this scam.”
