Mayor Aja Brown and First District Councilmember Janna Zurita officially welcomed Grocery Outlet to the City of Compton Thursday March 18. Occupying the site of former Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market that closed last year, Grocery Outlet offers the same trusted brands such as Kraft, Kellogg’s, Tide, Tyson, Amy’s Kitchen, Naked Juice and many more with prices up to 60 percent off traditional supermarkets, plus a wide assortment of wine and natural and organic products at surprisingly low prices.
“Today is a very special day in the city of Compton,” said Brown. “We have as an administration focused on bringing healthier options to the Compton community. It’s truly important for us not only to have healthy accessible food but also to focus on providing economic opportunities to our residents. We are big proponents of and have passed policies for local hiring. I am pleased to say that Grocery Outlet has come in and already exceeded our expectations with over 85 percent local hires right here in our very own store.”
Zurita added, “It is truly a great day in the City Compton! Grocery Outlet is new community partner but I’d like to say that last year before they even opened their doors they donated 2,000 bottles of water to my annual Walk for a Cure breast cancer awareness walk. There were 33 jobs created here and 25 of those jobs went to Compton residents, so thank you Grocery Outlet.”
Before an audience that included Third District Councilmember Tana L. McCoy, members of the Compton and Latino Business Chambers and county, state and federal representatives, owners Liza and Lito Guerrero thanked their employees, the Mayor and city council and Compton residents for their help and input in getting the store open less than a year since the closing of Fresh and Easy.
The Guerrero’s through Grocery Outlet donated $1,000 worth of food to the Salvation Army of Compton as well as $2,500 to Compton YouthBuild after partnering on a successful special Facebook fundraising campaign.
To commemorate the grand opening of the first Grocery Outlet location in Compton, the store’s owners invite the local community to attend their grand opening event on Saturday, March 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Free and open to the public, Grocery Outlet will offer a day of family-friendly fun and prizes including enjoy complimentary coffee and treats. The first 100 families will receive a Jamestown spiral sliced bone-in ham and the first 500 customers will receive a cool, eco-friendly reusable grocery bag. Customers will also have an opportunity to enter to win grand prizes such as $1,000 cash and free groceries for a year ($50 a month for a year). Customers may enter to win one of these grand prizes from March 19 through April 22. Winners will be announced at noon on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the Compton Grocery Outlet.
The opening of Grocery Outlet is a part of Mayor Brown’s Healthy Compton initiative, a community-based comprehensive approach to educating, empowering, and equipping Compton residents to lead healthier lives through the experience of healthy outcomes. Mayor Brown, along with a host of health and wellness partners throughout the City of Compton and surrounding communities are focused on enabling residents to build healthy habits. The Initiative is a result of Mayor’s Brown’s leadership and a grassroots community effort with local residents, business owners and stakeholders working together over the past two years. Grocery Outlet’s opening comes just one week into the Mayor’s city wide 90-Day Community Fitness Challenge.
Grocery Outlet has more than 240 locations in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
The Compton store is the ninth of 19 new Grocery Outlet stores scheduled to open in the Orange County and Los Angeles areas by the end of 2016, and with these openings independent Grocery Outlet operators will create jobs for more than 600 people.
