Gospel singer and founder of the Love Fellowship Tabernacle church in Los Angeles Daryl Coley died Tuesday March 15 at the age of 60. He had been in hospice care at the time of his death according to news reports. In 1991, Coley was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes and suffered temporary blindness.
The Grammy-nominated singer began his career in the 1970s performing with gospel star Edwin Hawkins and released his solo debut album, Just Daryl, in 1986. He went on to work with several jazz and pop artists including Nancy Wilson, Rodney Franklin, and Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire.
Coley’s most popular songs include “He’s Preparing Me,” “When Sunday Comes” and “Beyond the Vail.”
Coley was born in Berkeley, California on October 30, 1955, spending his formative years in Oakland, California. His parents separated when he was five years old, with he and his two siblings being raised by his mother in a solid Christian home. Musically, Coley was first influenced by his mother.
He once stated, "In my house there was gospel, classical and jazz. I had that kind of musical influence." During his childhood, he learned to play clarinet and piano.
Funeral services will take place April 2, at City of Refuge Los Angeles The services will also be live streamed, according to his family members.
