The county’s top health official reminded residents this week to update their vaccines for measles, rubella, pertussis, polio and hepatitis A and B and urged people traveling internationally or attending crowded summer events to take special precautions.

“Many vaccine-preventable diseases that are rare in the United States are still common in some parts of the world,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, interim health officer for Los Angeles County. “Unvaccinated travelers to and from other regions can easily bring disease back to the U.S.”

International travelers should check in with their health-care provider to see if family members may need additional vaccines or updates. Those staying home should also take precautions.

“This summer, before enjoying concerts, the Special Olympics World Games or other large-scale events, make certain that you’re up to date with all recommended vaccines,” Gunzenhauser said.

Public health officials said all residents can help prevent the spread of disease and recommended taking common sense precautions, including:

• get vaccinated

• wash hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds

• cover coughs and sneezes

• stay home from work or school when sick

• inform your medical care provider about international travel when seeking medical care
