The Board of Supervisors approved a $10,000 reward in hopes of tracking down the killer of a 23-year-old man gunned down last year in Compton in broad daylight.

David Matthews was walking his bicycle along the curb in the 1000 block of Elm Street, heading home after escorting his girlfriend to her residence, when a vehicle pulled up alongside and someone inside shot at him on May 23, police said.

A witness saw a dark gray, boxy SUV speeding eastbound on Elm just after the 11:25 a.m. shooting, according to police.

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who recommended the reward, said Matthew’s is family had recently moved from Long Beach to Compton.

“David had a bright future ahead of him, building custom bicycles,” Ridley-Thomas said.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call sheriff’s homicide Detective Dan Morris or Sgt. Robert Gray at (323) 890-5500.
