Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced that the city of Long Beach has been awarded $9.09 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These grants were awarded through three different HUD programs focused on providing decent housing and living environments for low- and moderate-income persons. Grants were awarded through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG), and HOME awards. A spokesperson for Richardson said she, “tirelessly fought for the $9 million grant on behalf of California’s 37th District.”

“With the many challenges that families have faced both as a result of the recent recession and, in many cases, long-term local economic issues, the ability for them to keep their homes despite financial difficulties has become a serious problem in a lot of communities, including many in the 37th District,” Richardson said.

“It is vital for the livelihood of our neighborhoods and the people who call them home that affordable quality housing is available.”

The three grants being awarded to Long Beach include:

• A Community Development Block Grant for $6.07 million, which will be used by the city to provide decent housing and to expand economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents in the District.

• An Emergency Shelter Grant award for $675,000, which is for improving the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters by providing annual grants to state, local and private entities.

• A HOME program grant for $2.3 million, which Long Beach will use to expand its supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income residents.

“These grants will help the city in keeping our neighborhoods healthy and happy by both providing suitable housing and expanding economic opportunities,” Richardson added. “I am proud to have helped lead the fight to provide adequate funding for the programs that made these grants possible.”
